How to get an ADHD assessment in Canberra right now

  • Your regular GP — the usual first step. Depending on the rules in the ACT, a trained GP may be able to assess you, or they can refer you to a psychiatrist.
  • A private psychiatrist — you’ll usually need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and waits are often long.
  • Public mental health services — available in some areas, usually for more complex needs.

If ADHD medication is being considered, doctors usually order a blood test and an ECG first. In the Australian Capital Territory these are typically done at Capital Pathology, Laverty Pathology or Australian Clinical Labs. Blood tests are usually bulk-billed, and not every collection centre does ECGs.
