Bulk-Billed ADHD Assessment in Brisbane: What’s Actually Available in 2026

Written by SophieUpdated 5 October 2026

Short answer: A fully bulk-billed (100% free) adult ADHD assessment is extremely rare in Brisbane — and across Australia. The appointments are long and complex, and there’s no Medicare item that covers them in full, so almost no clinic offers them for free. But there is another option: in Queensland, a trained GP can now assess and diagnose adult ADHD — and the blood test and ECG that form part of your assessment are usually bulk-billed.

Here’s the honest breakdown.

Why a fully bulk-billed ADHD assessment is so hard to find

An adult ADHD assessment isn’t a quick chat. It’s a structured clinical process — a full DSM-5 assessment across home, work and study, a developmental and childhood history, screening for co-existing conditions like anxiety and depression, and a cardiovascular safety check — that spans multiple appointments.

There’s no Medicare rebate that covers that amount of clinical time, so providers can’t responsibly offer the assessment itself for free. If a search for “bulk-billed ADHD assessment Brisbane” keeps hitting dead ends, long public waitlists, or clinics that add a gap fee once you enquire — that’s why. We’d rather just be upfront with you.

What an ADHD assessment actually costs in Brisbane

There are two pathways:

Private psychiatrist: a GP referral is required to claim a Medicare rebate, and the average wait for a first ADHD assessment appointment is around 16 weeks, and up to a year.1

GP-led assessment with ADHD GP: Queensland now allows appropriately trained GPs to assess, diagnose and manage adult ADHD. Our path to diagnosis is two appointments:

AppointmentLength
Initial Assessment45 min
Follow-Up Assessment (diagnosis + first script)30 min
Ongoing Medication Review20 min

That’s no referral, seen in about two weeks.

What is bulk-billed

Here’s the part that genuinely helps if you’re watching costs: the blood test and ECG that form part of your assessment are done externally and are usually bulk-billed at selected QML or Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology centres. We send the referrals; you won’t typically pay for these tests.

So while the consultations themselves are privately billed, a real portion of the overall assessment is bulk-billed.

What the assessment covers

The assessment is thorough — this isn’t a rubber-stamp diagnosis:

  • Comprehensive DSM-5 assessment across home, work and study
  • Full developmental and childhood history review
  • Screening for co-existing conditions — anxiety, depression and more
  • Other possible causes considered and ruled out
  • Cardiovascular safety check, with test referrals
  • Formal diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan
  • Your first prescription, where clinically appropriate

Why the Queensland GP pathway changed things

Historically, an ADHD diagnosis in Australia meant a psychiatrist or paediatrician — full stop. That single bottleneck is the reason people go searching for a bulk-billed option in the first place.

Queensland now allows suitably trained GPs to assess and manage adult ADHD, including prescribing where appropriate.2 For patients, that means lower cost, shorter waits (weeks, not many months), 100% telehealth from anywhere in Queensland, and no referral needed to get started.

Your assessment journey

Most patients go from first appointment to medication in under two weeks:

  1. Before you start (~15 min): a short online ADHD symptom screener (ASRS) and a heart-health questionnaire.
  2. Appointment 1 — Initial Assessment: history, symptoms and screening reviewed; tests ordered.
  3. In between (1–2 weeks): blood test and ECG (referrals provided, usually bulk-billed), plus a Childhood History Form completed by someone who knew you before age 12.
  4. Appointment 2 — Follow-Up Assessment: diagnosis confirmed and medication started if appropriate.
  5. Ongoing: medication reviews — monthly during dose adjustment, then every 3–6 months once stable.

Truly free or low-cost alternatives (with trade-offs)

If a paid GP assessment isn’t feasible right now:

  • Public mental health services (via a GP referral) — free, but long waitlists and usually reserved for more severe or complex cases.
  • Your regular bulk-billing GP — can start the conversation and initial screening, though most will still refer you into a diagnostic pathway.

Neither is a fast, guaranteed, free ADHD diagnosis — but it’s worth knowing the full landscape.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get a bulk-billed ADHD assessment in Brisbane?

A fully bulk-billed (free) adult ADHD assessment is very rare, because the appointments are too long and complex to be covered by Medicare alone. The alternative is a GP-led assessment with ADHD GP, which is privately billed — and the blood test and ECG components are usually bulk-billed.

How much does an ADHD assessment cost in Brisbane?

ADHD GP’s assessment is two privately billed appointments. Our How it works page takes you through each step, with our fees at the end. The blood test and ECG are usually bulk-billed.

Is an ADHD assessment covered by Medicare?

Medicare doesn’t cover the assessment consultations in full, so ADHD GP’s consults are privately billed. However, the blood test and ECG that form part of the assessment are usually bulk-billed.

Do I need a referral?

No — you can book directly. No GP referral and no long psychiatrist waitlist.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Queensland?

Yes. Queensland now allows appropriately trained GPs to assess, diagnose and manage adult ADHD, including prescribing where clinically appropriate.

How long does it take?
