How to get an ADHD assessment in Sydney right now

  • Your regular GP — the usual first step. Depending on the rules in New South Wales, a trained GP may be able to assess you, or they can refer you to a psychiatrist.
  • A private psychiatrist — you’ll usually need a GP referral to claim a Medicare rebate, and waits are often long.
  • Public mental health services — available in some areas, usually for more complex needs.

Blood tests and ECG in New South Wales

If ADHD medication is being considered, doctors usually order a blood test and an ECG first. In New South Wales these are typically done at Douglass Hanly Moir, Laverty Pathology or Australian Clinical Labs. Blood tests are usually bulk-billed, and not every collection centre does ECGs.
